about the travel December 2013 at The Architecture Foundation international artist group myvillages.org and the UK’s leading rural arts organisation Grizedale Arts present a three-week exhibition showcasing current projects and an accompanying events programme exploring new spatial concepts for the rural.
Taking the form of a live project in the AF Project Space, Good News From Nowhere: Building in the Countryside combines debate, workshops, food and trade in a dynamic public forum for the discussion of rural architectural strategies.

With the British relationship to the countryside and its future a pressing a societal concern, the project presents a timely focus on rural development, advocating for the importance of traditional rural typologies, while also drawing new concepts that emerge from the socio-spatial, cultural andeconomical realties of rural communities today. A clear split between the urban and the rural is impossible, yet most discussions focus on them individually.
Myvillages.org and Grizedale Arts continuously work to bridge the gap between audiences and communities from both backgrounds and through the Good News From Nowhere: Building in the Countryside public programme they offer a concrete space and network to engage with issues and projects linking urban and rural experiences, backgrounds and proposals.

Each week of the project is organised around one of three thematic blocks: Farms (farming and land use), Shops (local production and trade), and Halls (buildings and public use), all of which are relevant across both urban and rural realms. The installation in the AF Project Space combines a rotating themed display, presented alongside a permanent collection of live projects from both organisations. Visitors are welcomed to shop at Myvillages.org ’s International Village Shop and Grizedale Arts’ Honest Shop from Coniston, taste one of the daily lunchtime dishes served from the special London Larder or browse through the Bibliobox.

Throughout December, an extensive public events programme explores existing typologies of rural buildings and explore their contemporary rural and rural-urban versions through a range of evening panel discussions and Saturday afternoon workshops. More info: events programme
