about the project Sofie Thorsen researched the spaces especially designed for or appropriated by teenagers in a rural region in Upper Austria – a bench on a main square or the one near the woods where they hang around, talk about movies, gossip, drive their scooters, chew gum or just sit and wait for something to happen – or not.

Thorsen also organized 4 workshops with teenagers from different youth-clubs to investigate and visit the places occupied by them, either in the public space or in the landscape around the villages where they lived. The workshops revealed the actual use of the places, stories that went further back (it appeared that a lot of the places had also been used by the generation of the youths’ parents) and stories for the future.

Thorsen drew the situations in simple, accurate black lines on paper, giving them a more general feel than if she would have simply filmed the youths. Combined with the voice-over based on the narrations developed in the workshops (although in Austrian dialect), the film generates a feeling of recognition for all ages.

The film was shown in the local cinema before the main movie, mostly a mainstream Hollywood production. Additionally Thorsen made a documentary of the project and a poster-edition distributed on the information boards in the villages in the region.

The film was made in the context of the Festival of the Regions, one of the biggest festivals of contemporary culture in Austria. Since 1993 it has been taking place every two years at decentralized locations in the federal state of Upper Austria (capital: Linz). The intention of the festival is to bring art and everyday life together with sociological, political and artistic questions.
