about the project In 2002 Wapke Feenstra was invited to stay at Sophienholm, Denmark, during “On a Clear Day”, an exhibition that focused on contemporary landscapes in (Nordic) art. She spent three weeks as part of the small community living and working at Sophienholm.

Sophienholm in Lyngby (Denmark) is well-known for the country house where Frederikke Brun (1765-1835) held her salons at the beginning of the 19th century. Wapke Feenstra read Frederikke’s German poems and writings during her stay, while examining the landscape and the daily routine of the country house. During her stay, she received poems about the Frisian landscape written by Beart Oosterhaven, a poet who lives near Wjelsryp, the village where Wapke was born and bred.

The book combines texts by Frederikke Brun (texts from 1824), Wapke Feenstra and Beart Oosterhaven (both with texts from 2002) writing about their own environment. Following the book’s publication in 2003 Feenstra and Oosterhaven presented the book at a farm in Sexbierum that is used for cultural events, at the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, and at Overgaden, Copenhagen. Passages from the book were broadcast on Frisian regional radio.

about artist and participants Wapke Feenstra (Wjelsryp, 1959) lives and works in Rotterdam. She is an artist and writer. Feenstra involves people in experiencing their physical and mental surroundings more intensely. See e.g. ‘–b-l-i-k-o-p-e-n-e-r-’ (eye opener), www.verhalenvandordrecht.nl and www.woefwoef.nl, in which she allows the viewer to experience a town through the routes of dog owners walking their dogs. Currently she works on a digital ‘webxylotheek’ which makes citizens more aware of the impact of trees in public space.

Myvillages.org is a co-operation between three artists. Kathrin Böhm (Höfen, 1969) researches the role of art in the public and architectural space in her projects, often together with Public Works. In the ‘cityscapes’ of Wapke Feenstra (Wjelsryp, 1959) inhabitants or visitors participate in extensive (digital) art projects. In a related manner Antje Schiffers (Heiligendorf, 1967) reports about her encounters and travels in her (written) projects.
