about the project In June 2000 Elisabeth Schimana and Markus Seidl started with the following mission:

“A farming village in Upper Austria is sought, whose inhabitants are ready to discuss the following questions with us: What does comfort mean? Is it comfortable to do nothing? What does it mean to do nothing? Who is allowed to do what about doing nothing? The results form seven days of doing nothing. Substitute personnel and catering will be provided!”

Was heisst nichts tun? Wer darf was tun um nichts zu tun? Die Ergebnisse gestalten sieben Tage nichts tun. Für Ersatzpersonal und Verpflegung wird gesorgt!”

about artist and participants After months of searching, Schimana and Seidl arrived at Eberhardschlag, a small village in the Austrian Muehlviertel. Eight houses, seven families. Seven children (who took off from school to do nothing), 10 women, 13 men, most of them supplementary income farmers, and workers or employees of various professions. It’s here that the project started.

Elisabeth Schimana (Innsbruck) lives in Hainburg. She is working as a performer, free-lance composer and radio artist. She is currently artistic director of the OST.SÜD.OST. festival, a festival dedicated to Eastern Europe where contemporary electronic music intersects with folk music. Markus Seidl (1973) lives and works in Vienna, Lenz and further surroundings. Seidl attempts to interweave ‘real’ public space with virtual public space, working mainly with the Stadtwerkstatt/Linz and the Kunstradio/Vienna. Since 1996 he is working on fundamental radio.
