Sukyun Yang and Insook Ju

about the project Yang and Ju made an exhibition in Kunstverein Ahlen, Germany. The catalogue features pictures of their mobile home and ‘media furniture’. Their long-term project “Yang-Ju-Bang” (Korean for: the house of Yang and Ju) deals with associations between things and creates new connections in the use of furniture. Ahlen was their last stop.

In “Yang-Ju-Bang” Yang and Ju combined materials in an unusual and clever way. They recycled second-hand furniture to make new pieces, equipped with recycled computers. In doing so they not only lent new value to discarded objects, but also built bridges across time. By making new, forward-looking pieces out of discarded objects the artists showed a respect for the past. Rather than destroying it to make way for something else, they adapted it, thus proving that it is possible for things that were considered obsolete to evolve and change with us, to accompany us into the future in a different form.

about artist and participants Sukyun Yang (Seoul, Korea 1966) and Insook Ju (Seoul, Korea 1966) worked together on the project Yang-Ju-Bang. They studied art in Münster, Germany and were artist-in-residence at for example Schöppingen (an artist’s village in Germany) and KIK Kolderveen (a reused milk factory in a Dutch village). They use materials and observations from their personal history and surroundings.

Yang and Ju believe that the only alternative to living in modern society is to live in a virtual house, to be constantly on the move: the virtual home can be taken everywhere. Their proposals for new projects come in the form of DVDs, drawings and objects. Some of the pieces in the exhibition could be used by the public.
